Redefining the voice of American contemporary design

Surface is the American magazine of global contemporary design. Founded in 1993, Surface traverses the worlds of architecture, art, design, fashion, and travel, with a focus on how these fields shape and are shaped by contemporary culture. Through incisive writing, engaging visuals, and an emphasis on process and craftsmanship, Surface inspires, informs, and entertains readers, pointing them to the next big ideas in global design.

In July 2013, Noë & Associates redesigned Surface Magazine—redefining ‘The American Voice of Design’—and for the next two and a half years designed every issue and art directed every photoshoot. Working with CEO Marc Lotenberg, our rebranding and magazine design repositioned the publication as the authoritative voice in American contemporary design.

Scope: Brand Strategy, Identity, Guidelines, Magazine Design, Art Direction, Photography Production.

Surface is the definitive American voice of global contemporary design. The publication provides a rich resource to discover groundbreaking projects, emerging talents, and innovative developments in the worlds of architecture, interiors, fashion, and industrial design.

Every issue of Surface has a unique face. In order to capture readers’ interest the covers are intriguing, compelling, memorable and significant.

We look at the world through the lens of design, reaching creative professionals who are educated, affluent, and influential. We set the standard for quality across a vast range of creative disciplines and industries.

Surface Magazine

Throughout the journey Noë & Associates had the honour to work with some of the most exciting names in the worlds of architecture, art, fashion and design. From Ian Schrager on our first issue, to Rita Mizzoni, Julian Schnabel, Tadao Ando, and with John Pawson on our last. In 2016, after creating comprehensive brand guidelines the baton was passed to the new in-house team at Surface, with Mark Noë continuing to consult with owner, Marc Lotenberg.

Art Direction

We believe that products are nothing without a story and we wanted to tell a story and how that story relates to design. We don’t create a product, we create an experience. We believe in the designers and creators. Investing in original design is good business. Focusing on craftsmanship and details and believing in the endorsement of new talent. We believe in creativity, originality and authenticity. Our audience is not buying fashion. It is buying great design.
